An excursion to Jibbon Beach.

On Tuesday Year 4 went to Jibbon Beach. We met some Aboriginal guides called Pam and David who showed us around the Jibbon area and took us to some rock carvings which showed information about the Dharwal families from many years ago. David taught the boys how to throw spears while Pam showed the girls how to make baskets out of plants and how to make jewellery. Pam asked the girls to find shells with little holes that fit into our earrings and she put them onto Kareena’s sleepers. Pam got long grass and tore it into strips which could be threaded through the shells to make a necklace. They showed us which plants could be eaten such as “pigface” which tastes like Kiwi fruit, and other plants that could be used as medicine. We also ate some little yellow / green berries that were the size of a Tick Tack but they tasted really bitter. They told us stories about Aboriginal culture and why you should never take Aboriginal things from their land without their permission. If you do, you could have strange dreams and get sick until you put the things back where they belong.
